Rose apples are a refreshing fruit from South Asia with a delicate flavour and crisp texture.
An aesthetically appealing fruit, rose apples have a distinctively elongated, bell-like shape and their skin boasts a glossy shine. The smooth, delicate skin has a wax like texture, which is the reason why the fruit is often referred to as ‘wax apple’.
Beneath their attractive exterior is white or pink flesh which is fragrant, crisp, and extremely juicy. In fact, rose apples are one of the most succulent fruits we’ve ever tried: they consist of over 90% water, so it’s not surprising that these ‘water apples’ are considered ideal for quenching thirst! The usually seedless flesh is subtly sweet, offering hints of watermelon and apple flavour.
Whilst immature green rose apples are perfect for making delicious pickles and chutneys and combining into salads, the riper red-skinned fruits are usually eaten fresh out of hand (especially because you don’t need to peel them!)
